What you’re actually paying for when you hire a celebrant

“Why do celebrants cost what they cost?”

Because on the surface, it can look like:

  • someone shows up
  • talks for 20–30 minutes
  • signs some paperwork

And that’s it.

Except . . . it’s not.

You’re not paying for the ceremony day

This is the biggest misconception.

You’re not paying for 30 minutes on the day

You’re paying for everything that makes those 30 minutes work.

Most couples don’t realise this . . .

The ceremony is the one part of your wedding where:

  • everyone is paying attention
  • there’s no distraction
  • no music, no food, no drinks to fall back on

It either works – or it doesn’t.

There’s nowhere to hide.

What goes into a good ceremony

Behind the scenes, you’re paying for:

1. Structure

Not just “what happens”, but how it flows

2. Writing

Language that sounds natural, not generic

3. Timing

Knowing when to pause, when to move, when to shift tone

4. Delivery

Confidence, presence, and reading the room

5. Experience

Knowing what works – and what really doesn’t

The difference you can feel (even if you can’t explain it)

You’ve probably experienced both:

1. a ceremony that felt:

  • smooth
  • engaging
  • easy to sit through

2. and one that felt:

  • slightly awkward
  • a bit long
  • hard to stay focused on

That difference? That’s the celebrant.

Cheap celebrants vs experienced ones

This isn’t about price for the sake of it.

It’s about outcomes.

A cheaper celebrant might:

  • follow a template
  • keep things very safe
  • deliver something “fine”

An experienced celebrant will:

  • build something around you
  • shape the experience
  • make it feel effortless

Here’s the honest version

You don’t need the most expensive celebrant.

But you do need the right one for the kind of ceremony you want.

If you want something simple and basic

There are plenty of options.

If you want something:

  • thoughtful
  • engaging
  • actually reflective of you

Then the investment makes sense.

If you’re weighing this up right now

Ask yourself “do we want a ceremony that’s just done . . . or one that actually feels like something?”

That’s the real decision.

If that matters to you

Then we should talk.

I work with couples who:

  • want more than “just fine”
  • care about how their ceremony lands
  • want something natural.
